Earthing System

Earthing & Bonding System
As Per RDSO/SPN/197, version 1.0

This RDSO Code of Practice for the Earthing & Bonding of Signaling Equipment highlights the critical role of an effective earthing system in ensuring the reliability and safety of signaling operations.

Scope

The code outlines the Earthing & Bonding system to be used for signaling equipment, particularly those incorporating solid-state components. These components are highly susceptible to damage caused by surges, transients, and over-voltages arising from lightning strikes, substation switching operations, and other electrical disturbances.

This includes critical signaling equipment such as:

  • Electronic Interlocking Systems
  • Integrated Power Supply Equipment
  • Digital Axle Counters
  • Data Loggers

These components work together to deliver a robust and reliable Earthing & Bonding system for advanced signaling equipment. The system's layout and functionality can be better understood through the above diagram.

Earthing & Bonding System

The system comprises the following components:

Earth Electrode

Provides a direct conductive path to safely dissipate fault current into the ground.

Earth Enhancement Material

Improves soil conductivity and ensures long-term stable grounding performance.

Earth Pit Chamber

Protective enclosure for inspection and maintenance of the earthing system.

Equipotential Earth Busbar

Maintains equal potential across all connected equipment to prevent voltage differences.

Connecting Cables & Tape/Strip

Ensures reliable electrical connectivity between all grounding components.

Other Associated Accessories

Includes clamps, connectors, and fittings required for complete installation.
